Workshop on ‘eXe learning’ software - 24 January 2015

Date:
Saturday, 24 January 2015 (All day)
Status:
Completed
Type:
Training or Workshop

BALID Institute of Information Management (BIIM) is going to organize a daylong workshop on ‘eXe learning’ software on Saturday 24 January 2015 at CIRDAP Computer Lab, Chameli House, 17 Topkhana Road, Dhaka. This is the first time in Bangladesh, a good number of the library professionals are going to experience with e-learning software.

Overview
Libraries used to arrange training program for library instructions, information literacy, e-resource management, reference management, avoiding plagiarism, and many more. In addition to trainings, the users need to practice their learning in a self-learning mode. Furthermore, the users who do not have the chance to attend or the personnel who are very shy or cannot manage time to attend library-arranged program, can practice the same materials through self-learning, and update their knowledge by taking exercise and quiz and monitor their own progress.

The library professionals are accountable to create and maintain the e-learning materials for their users. Generally, to create online content there is a need for IT professionals but the majority of the libraries have scarcity of dedicated IT professional. This is the visible gap and ‘eXe learning’ software is there to reduce the gap.

eXe learning is an open source application, and allows library professional to create online learning materials by themselves without the need to become proficient in HTML/XML or complicated web-publishing applications. Experts say, knowing Microsoft Word and internet browsing are enough to operate this software and create attractive and functional online learning materials.

Objectives:
i) To strengthen e-learning expertise among the library professionals.
ii) To create awareness about e-learning management by the libraries.
iii) To train trainers for respective organizations.

Workshop Outline:
The first session will introduce the software and its applications followed by hands on training in the second session. Practical exercises will be on the third session and fourth session; and in the last session, the participants will personalize the entire learning according to their organizational need, and present their learning outcomes.

Anticipated outcomes
Participates should able to
a) develop an e- learning structure that suits their organizational needs,
b) build online resources that is flexible and easy to updated,
c) work as a trainer to develop e-learning resources in the respective organization

Short Introduction to 'SLiMS' and 'RFID':
Senayan Library Management System (SLiMS) is open source integrated library management software originally developed in Indonesia with a variety of developers from the different parts of the world including Bangladesh. The software was awarded in the category of Open Source by Indonesian ICT Award - 2009. Since, SLiMS-BD Country Coordinator works with the SLiMS Developers Community (SDC), importance on Bangla language is applied on the system. Since SLiMS is developed based on Unicode, it completely supports Bangla input and searching. On the other hand, it has built-in feature of Digital Library and Institutional Repository feature as well as audio-video streaming. As a result, no other software is required in the library.

On the other hand, Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) technology have dynamic role in the libraries for tracking resources and provide unique identification. This technology is used to automate library operation and services, namely, check-in, check-out, sorting (shelf management), stock management and inventory control. It also use to modernize the library management system and facilitate use of and access to library resources which significantly improve the quality of library services and enhance the quantity of using library resources for supporting higher study and research. The Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) technology will allow auto identification of large numbers of tagged objects like books, reports, journals, magazines, CDs, DVDs etc. using radio waves that will enable faster traceability of library resources, increase its security and allow fast transactions of resources among the users.

Expected Outcome:
Participants will be able to install SLiMS and use it by themselves. They will also be able to implement SLiMS at their institutions. Practical demonstration on RFID will aslo be experienced by the participants.

Training on 'Plagiarism' and 'Reference Management Software Zotero'

Date:
Saturday, 19 December 2015 (All day)
Status:
Completed
Type:
Training or Workshop

Plagiarism means taking the words and thoughts of others (their ideas, concepts, images, sentences, and so forth) and using them as if they were your own, without crediting the author or citing the source. Most plagiarism is willful, a sort of theft. It is possible to plagiarize unintentionally, though, by being careless or hurried, omitting quotation marks or slipping into the words or ideas of others through inattention or simply for convenience. Whether you meant it or not, you can be found guilty of plagiarism whenever other people’s language gets used without proper citation in your text. At this and most other universities, plagiarism is regarded as intellectual theft; faculty will rarely bother to determine whether you stole words on purpose or walked out of the shop having forgotten to pay. (https://www.uky.edu/Ombud/Plagiarism.pdf)

Zotero is a free and easy-to-use research tool that helps to collect, organize, and analyze research. It is a free, open-source program that can be downloaded as a browser extension for Firefox, Chrome, and Safari and as a standalone program that works with Windows, Mac, or Linux systems. Zotero enables researchers to store author, title, and other bibliographic information, import citations from other citation managers such as RefWorks, EndNote, Mendeley and to export that information as formatted references. Seamlessly write a paper and cite it at the same time either online or offline.

Objectives:
Equip librarians, academicians and researchers to acquire a solid understanding of Zotero’s capabilities and how those capabilities can best meet their needs.

Target Audience:
Anyone who wants to introduce or support Zotero at her/his institution and check the authenticity of scholarly writings before submitting for publications. This may include Librarian, Information manager, Researchers, Academia’s who are involved with scholarly research and creative writing.

Prerequisites: Basic familiarity with scholarly writing and basic computer application is recommended.

The Workshops:
The workshops combine short presentations with interactive, “hands-on” practice, as well as the opportunity for participants to exchange their own experiences with Zotero, Mendely and Plagiarism.

Expected outcome:
Participants will gain valuable insights in the nuts and bolts of Zotero, how to use, support and promote Zotero, and how Zotero can serve the different needs of members of the academic community. Mendely will be disscussed also in the progeamme. Participants will also be able to check plagiarism for their own or others and able to determine whether the article is publishable.
